Biography

Roy Bemelmans is a Dutch composer of instrumental music. His style can be described as narrative, reflective and sincere, and seems to naturally evoke and support stories. His award-winning work combines traditional musical aesthetics and instrumentation with atmospheric and organic textures. Hailing from the hills of the Southern Netherlands, Bemelmans believes in writing music by instinct, rather than with the head, and finds inspiration in nature and the human condition. Listening to his music may call to mind such composers as Max Richter, Mychael Danna, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Wim Mertens and Thomas Newman. Bemelmans has a thorough background in the field of film music. He is an alumnus of the UCLA Film Scoring Program, ASCAP Film Scoring Workshop and Berlinale Talent Campus, and has worked as an assistant to composer Andrea Morricone (son of Ennio Morricone). Recent projects include the drama series "De Studio's" for VRT and Amazon Prime, and the Irish short film "Mycelium", a survival story of a mother and daughter set during the great famine in 1847. Bemelmans' score to "Mycelium" earned him a BUMA Music in Media Award in 2024.
