Summary

A British psychiatrist catches his wife in a relationship with an American man and, without her knowledge, spirits the American away to a basement back room in a bombed-out London neighborhood, chaining him to a wall and keeping him barely alive, while taunting him against an undefined date on which he will kill him in an acid bath. The authorities, meanwhile, only know that the American is missing, as both the doctor and his wife remain silent about him to avoid a public scandal, a charade which continues for months...
