The name of the language is usually the name of its people because it is the defining trait of its cultural identity and its experience in the world. But Brazil is experiencing a sui generis linguistic situation: while 98% of the population speaks the same language, Portuguese, it is a country with one of the greatest linguistic diversities in the world, with more than 160 native and African languages spoken in the territory.
